Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is a dental procedure performed to treat infection or damage to the innermost part of a tooth called the pulp. The pulp contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue, and when it becomes infected or injured, it can cause severe pain and lead to the loss of the tooth if left untreated. Root canal treatment aims to save the tooth and relieve the patient's pain.

Here's an overview of the root canal procedure:
  • Diagnosis: The dentist will begin by taking X-rays to assess the extent of the infection or damage and to determine the shape of the root canals. They will also ask about the patient's symptoms and may perform sensitivity tests.
  • Local Anesthesia: To ensure the patient is comfortable during the procedure, the dentist will administer local anesthesia to numb the affected tooth and the surrounding area.
  • Isolation: A rubber dam is placed around the tooth to keep it dry and free of saliva during the procedure.
  • Access Opening: The dentist creates a small opening in the crown of the tooth to access the pulp chamber and root canals.
  • Cleaning and Shaping: The infected or damaged pulp tissue is removed using specialized instruments. The dentist will also clean and shape the inside of the root canals to remove any remaining bacteria and debris.

The entire root canal procedure may require one or more appointments, depending on the complexity of the case. After the treatment is complete, patients may experience some discomfort or mild pain, which can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medications.

Root canal treatment is highly successful and can save a tooth that might otherwise need to be extracted. It allows patients to retain their natural teeth and maintain proper oral function. It's essential to follow good oral hygiene practices, including regular dental check-ups, after root canal treatment to ensure the long-term health of the treated tooth.
